Vineyard

Our young, vibrant vineyard of 4.5 hectares in the rural setting of Liezele serves as the canvas for our wines, crucially influencing their quality and character. The terroir represents the intriguing interplay of soil, climate, the context of the vineyard and cellar, and the personal touch of the winemaker. A skilled winemaker aims to create harmony with all these factors year after year. The result is unique wines where you can discern the terroir's character and the winemaker's soul through sight, smell, and taste.

Sandy loam soil

The true beauty of a winery lies underground: Liezele's sandy loam plain is excellently suited for wine cultivation. Good viticultural soils boast a lively top layer rich in humus and abundant with life. The water management in both the top layer and deeper in the ground is crucial. It's essential to foster a root system that develops both in depth and within the building layer. Seeding grass and other crops helps regulate the soil's fertility and introduce life above and below the ground. The right balance between water management, soil, and plants is the true secret to excellent grape growth.

Grape varieties

Winemaker Pieter Raeymaekers selected grape varieties that thrive in our climate and chose the most suitable clones for the terroir. Although our regions seem to be getting warmer each year, we still have few hours of sunshine; it's Belgium, after all. Hence, we opted for varieties that bud relatively late (to avoid bud damage in freezing temperatures), ripen a bit earlier, and thus require less sun to mature. All Valke Vleug varieties perform well on the sandy loam plain, and we exclusively work with Vitis vinifera species grafted onto American rootstocks. We have 20,000 vines comprising 7 varieties, with Pinot Auxerrois and Chardonnay being the most important, from which we primarily produce white and sparkling wines.
